Photographer’s Statement

My interest in photography began as a youth with a Brownie Hawkeye, followed by a Besa II 120 film camera. These were superseded by Canon and Minolta 35mm, and Yashica medium format. With skills learned in High School and college, although seldom used now, I have a complete darkroom and am partial to black and white prints. However, almost all of my work is digital color using a Nikon DSLR with Nikon lenses and images processed using Camera Raw and Photoshop. Prints are available on request using archival quality professional printing. In addition to photography, I have created and broadcast approximately forty hours of programming on Public TV.

My cameras have changed over the decades, but not the experience that comes from the insights and wonder of a photograph. Using digital cameras and lenses from normal to macro to telephoto, I am constantly amazed by the world discovered through the lens, a world I could not otherwise see and the images created from it. It brings me great joy.

My goal is to capture the moment, the essence and spirit of an expression, a scene, a personality, a relationship and share the image and my vision with others. The intention is to bring artistic appreciation and joy to the viewer; hopefully, the viewer will be visually encouraged to emotionally enter the image and to daydream as if it were actually occurring.

I may hand re-touch images by cropping or pleasing changes in color and contrast to better reveal the actual scene. Portraits may include removal of skin blemishes, stray hair, teeth whitening, and softening of the background. Black and white or sepia toned images can be printed. Professional equipment is used to scan a print and process it digitally.
